Mary served as a U.N. Committed Representative for the Zonta Club of
Montgomery County and attended the Non-Governmental Organization (NGO)
Committee on the Status of Women at the United Nations in New York in 1997.

Issues discussed at the meeting included:

Trafficking in women and girls

Violence against women migrant workers

Rural women

Convention on Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW)

Women in Science and Technology

The Committee also discussed follow-up issues to Fourth World Conference
on Women in Beijing.

The Committee had compiled 90,000 petitions on Violence Against Women and
would present those petitions to the United Nations General Assembly later
that year.

On March 6, 2004 Mary, who currently serves as United Nations Chair for
the Zonta Club of Montgomery County, will represent her club at a
United Nations event in New York City titled "Women as Peace Builders".
The event will feature Margit Webjörn, the President of Zonta
International, and the main speaker will be
Maha Muna, the Program Manager
for UNIFEM's Governance, Peace and Security Division.
